My Top 5 Favorite Books/Series

**Please review the intended audience for these books before you read them to make sure that you aren't reading something that contains topics that you are uncomfortable with.**

1. Wonder by R. J. Palacio

synopsis:

August Pullman was born with facial deformities and many medical issues. This prevented him from going to public school. When he starts fifth grade at Beecher Prep, Auggie struggles to be accepted by his classmates because of his face. The perspective of this book starts off with August, but then switches to his classmates, his sister, and other. This book is a journey of empathy, compassion, and acceptance.

My personal view:

I really enjoyed reading this book, because of how well the characters are created. I also like that in Wonder, it shows that not everyone is kind and caring all of the time, and in life, you're going to have to face people who really don't like you; even when you haven't done anything wrong. It shows that you have to learn to get past that, and accept that not everyone can love you in this world. The power and support of friends and family is also represented in this book. It shows that there will be people who have your back. I generally really liked the message of Wonder, and I hope that everyone can learn something from it.

2. Percy Jackson and Olympians (series) by Rick Riordan

Synopsis:

Percy Jackson believes that he is a regular kid; until a series of events lead his to believe otherwise. Turns out, Percy is a demigod, and when his mom send his to Camp Halfblood, which is a summer camp for demigods. This series is about Percy's quest(s) to save the world and learn how to live in the world of the Olympians.

My Personal View:

This series is HILARIOUS. I love reading it over and over! The way each Greek god is portrayed really helps bring the story alive. It's action packed and I really recommend this book for everyone!

3. Heartless by Marissa Meyer

Synopsis:

Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen. Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans. (from goodreads.com)

My Personal Opinion:

I absolutely COULD NOT put this book down. It was emotional and a wonderful journey. Heartless is a very well written prequel to the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and fits perfectly into this world. Throughout this whole book, I could feel an impending sense of doom. After all, this is the story of how the Queen of Hearts became the way she is. So, there could be no happy ending for Cath, as her future has already been set.

4. The Maze Runner (series) by James Dashner

Synopsis:

When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone. Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade. Outside the towering stone walls that surround the Glade is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive. Everything is going to change. Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying. Remember. Survive. Run. (from goodreads.com)

My Personal Opinion:

I am a huge fan of dystopian novels, and this is probably my favorite series in that genre. It is filled with action and James Dashner did an amazing job painting a world affected by the Flare. There were some incredibly sad moments (at least for me) but that just added to the overall 'realness' of these characters. There are plenty of unexpected twist and turns that will leave you sitting of the edge of your seat! I recommend this series to any reader, and especially those who love the dystopian genre.

5. Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson

Synopsis:

Before Peter Pan belonged to Wendy, he belonged to the girl with the crow feather in her hair...

Fifteen-year-old Tiger Lily doesn't believe in love stories or happy endings. Then she meets the alluring teenage Peter Pan in the forbidden woods of Neverland and immediately falls under his spell.

Peter is unlike anyone she's ever known. Impetuous and brave, he both scares and enthralls her. As the leader of the Lost Boys, the most fearsome of Neverland's inhabitants, Peter is an unthinkable match for Tiger Lily. Soon, she is risking everything—her family, her future—to be with him. When she is faced with marriage to a terrible man in her own tribe, she must choose between the life she's always known and running away to an uncertain future with Peter.

With enemies threatening to tear them apart, the lovers seem doomed. But it's the arrival of Wendy Darling, an English girl who's everything Tiger Lily is not, that leads Tiger Lily to discover that the most dangerous enemies can live inside even the most loyal and loving heart. (from goodreads.com)

My Personal Opinion:

Wow. I really, really love this book. The fearlessness and boldness of the heroine (Tiger Lily) is a great aspect of this story. The characterization in this story is what really drives it. All of the character are complex and throughout this book, the characters develop significantly. I'm warning you; this book will really stomp on your heart...but I still recommend it :)

BONUS:

This isn't an actual book, but it is a short story that I think was pretty good!

The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin

The story's narrator describes the seemingly utopian city of Omelas and the one injustice upon which this utopia depends. When the story opens, the people of Omelas—a place of unimaginable happiness—are celebrating the annual Summer Festival.
